A Guide To Living In Armley

Armley is a suburb of Leeds located on the west side of the city. Like much of Leeds, Armley grew in the Industrial Revolution and had several mills, one which is now the home of the Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills.

Being situated only 1.6km from the city centre, Armley is well connected. Commuters have the choice of 5 different bus routes to get them into the city, meaning there’s no feeling of being stranded in the suburb. For those who prefer the train, it is possible to get into the centre using the Northern and Transpennine Express lines and for those who choose to commute by car the nearest motorway to Armley is the M621, right near Kirkstall Road and the centre is just over a 10 minute drive away.

The hub of Armley is Town Street which offers a large range of charity shops, cafes, pubs, takeaways along with some more well-known shops such as Tesco’s and Boots. There are also plenty of independent businesses such as traditional pubs, cafes, a newsagent, a post office and a pizza restaurant.

Armley Methodist Chapel is an iconic sight for the area or as known to most people in Leeds, Mike’s Carpets. If you walk up the road past the carpet shop, now known as MC Carpets, you’re in the heart of Armley.

Florence Café is the perfect place to stop off and get a proper fry up, although being an Italian café you can also get an amazing lasagne, along with enough coffee to fuel you for the week!

The area has a large presence of charity shops, with both British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK having large stores there.

Gotts and Armley parks offer outstanding views over to Headingley and are home to the dreaded ‘killer’ steps. A 161-step challenge that see many people turn up at the weekend to feel the burn. The perfect place to get a sweat one while taking in the views.

Armley has something for everyone whether that is scouring  through the charity shops on the high street, scoffing your face at one of the many cafes, socialising in the locals pubs or getting a sweat on in the local park.

Upcoming events in Armley

The majority of upcoming events taking place in Armley are not for the faint hearted. All these events will be taking place and the most iconic and famous mill in the area, Armley Mills.

On the 23rd July at the Mill there will be a ghost hunt, which is a haven for haunted activity. The question is are you brave enough to join Haunted Happenings, taking a peek into the harsh living conditions for those who worked there. There has been some terrifying activity on previous overnight ghosts hunts at these Satanic Mills.  Join them for the night to see why it rates so highly on the lost for ghost hunts.

For those who would prefer something more educational, the Community Hub & Library in Armley are hosting a session, ‘Introduction to start-up Leeds’. In the session you can find out how the group can help support you and your business. If you have a business idea or have recently started your own business, head down to find out how they can support you to get the skills and confidence to take your business further.  Join them on the 18th July to find out more.

With just the above a snapshot of what is offered in the suburb, thee are events for all.
